Talks break down at the United Nations COP25 Climate Summit

The United Nations 25th annual international Conference of the Parties (COP) ended on Sunday. Despite wrapping up two days later than scheduled, global cooperation on climate change has not been reached. Countries marked as the earth’s major polluters have consistently resisted urges to increase their efforts in fighting against global warming.

Negotiators have reached a compromise agreement that will present new plans to cut carbon emissions to be negotiated next year. Talks will continue in Glasgow, Scotland in November 2020.

But this agreement puts off urgent discussion on issues such as the global regulation of carbon-emitting markets. Much to the protests of smaller island nations who opposed countries such as Brazil, China, and India

“After 25 years I would be inclined to say the future of international cooperation on climate change is not looking good, but it’s not clear what the alternative would be,” Richard Klein of Stockholm Environment Institute said during the talks.

Summits focusing on the current climate crisis come as critical opportunities for smaller countries to connect with more industrialized countries. Many of which are already experiencing the ramifications of climate change. Aside from expressing hopes of climate action from the part of large countries, smaller nations had hoped for financial aid to survive the adverse effects of the climate crisis.

“What I am concerned about is that we are moving to a similar dynamic that we did before Copenhagen in that countries don’t trust each other anymore,” added Klein. Cooperation between UN delegates is a necessary move to combat global warming.
