Star Trek fans call out Trump’s “rip-off” Space Force logo

United States President Donald J. Trump unveiled to the public a new official seal for the sixth branch of the country’s military, the Space Force.

Trump took to Twitter to share his big news to the world on Saturday and Star Trek fans didn’t miss a beat when they noticed its uncanny similarity to the fictional Starfleet Command logo.

Given how fandoms on Twitter react to certain things, it was no surprise that fans made sure to share some strong feelings about the matter. Bill Palmer of Palmer Report didn’t hold back when he claimed that Trump “is the world’s dumbest criminal” for “ripping-off” the design. See the Tweet below:

Many others ridiculed the possibility of plagiarism surrounding the issue. But some even celebrated the fact that the new branch of the U.S. Armed Forces might be based on their favorite sci-fi production.

Josh Billinson reacted to the design of the logo in a Tweet that wrote: “it’s actually good that they ripped off the space force logo from star trek and made it cool as hell”

The Starfleet Command was introduced in Star Trek’s pilot episode back in 1966. We’re pretty sure its late creator, Gene Roddenberry, didn’t expect that the United States government would pay homage to the show that became a pop culture phenomenon. Or did they?

According to a statement from the U.S. Space Force, the newly unveiled seal “pays tribute to the newest armed service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force,” as per Space News.
