Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aims to globally trademark “Sussex Royal”

British royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are pursuing to turn the “Sussex Royal” brand as a global trademark. It will be used for a variety of items and services including clothes, stationary and “emotional support groups”.

According to a report published by the Guardian, international filings were submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) back in December. The potential trademark will cover Australia, Canada, Europe, and America.

A separate application was made to register “Sussex Royal the Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.

The royal couple uses Sussex Royal as their Instagram account handle. It is also used on their website which went online last week. At the time, the pair announced that they were distancing themselves from the monarchy as they intend to “step back” from their duties as senior royals. In their widely publicized announcement, Harry and Meghan revealed their plans to “work to become financially independent”. See their full statement in the Instagram post below:

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.”

Six categories were identified in the registration of the brand. This includes printed materials such as greeting cards and magazines, apparel ranging from footwear to pajamas, charitable foundations, education, and social care services including emotional support groups.

Ownership of Sussex Royal was given to the royal couple back in December prior to this, applications to trademark were under the pair’s advisers Sara Latham and Natalie Campbell.
