Mark Zuckerberg rules out banning political ads on Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, believes it isn’t right for companies to censor politicians or news articles in a democratic set-up.

Zuckerberg delivered an anecdote on the freedom of speech in Washington DC. The speech came after the social media giant received weeks of criticism. Facebook received backlash over its decision to ban all forms of political advertisements that contain incorrect information.

In the speech, Zuckerberg said that he considered completely banning all political ads on his online platforms. He then added that the move might favor incumbent political figures and whoever the press chooses to cover. While the Facebook founder supported the concept, he then clarified that it was not clear what rules will have to be placed.

Instead of imposing his idea, Zuckerberg decided that his company should “err on the side of greater expression”.

“We’re at another crossroads,” he added. The CEO then pointed out that the journey that comes along with free speech is a tedious one.

“We can either continue to stand for free expression, understanding its messiness but believing that the long journey towards greater progress requires confronting ideas that challenge us. Or we can decide that the cost is simply temporary.

“The future depends on all of us,” he said, as per the BBC.

In his rousing speech, Zuckerberg then urged the public to support freedom of expression saying:

“And whether you like it or not. I think we need to recognize what is at stake and come together to stand for voice and free expression at this critical moment.”
