Joaquin Phoenix drops f-bombs in his Golden Globes speech

Joaquin Phoenix has made it clear that he absolutely does not enjoy publicity. The man doesn’t usually do televised interviews and he never has a good time in them. So it’s no surprise that he’s not a big fan of awards shows in Hollywood either.

Despite this, Hollywood is embracing him like a mother smothering her wayward child. Phoenix bagged a major award at the 77th Golden Globes. His performance as Arthur Fleck a.k.a. Joker in the titular film directed by Todd Phillipps. When the actor went up the stage to accept his trophy for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, Phoenix made sure to make it extra explicit.

“There is no f*cking best actor,” he began before proceeding to pay tribute to his fellow nominees. “We all know there’s no f*cking competition between us. I’m your f*cking student. I can’t believe the beautiful mesmerizing, unique work that you’ve all done this year. … But I really do feel honored to be mentioned with you.”

Those nominated in the same category included Christian Bale, Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, and Jonathan Pryce.

In his tribute to Phillips, the actor said: “I’m such a pain in the ass. I cannot believe you put up with me.”

Later on in his speech, Phillips called out the crowd saying that merely mentioning the tragic bushfires in Australia isn’t enough to help. He called to “make some changes” and do “more.” Phoenix continued to swear throughout his dialogue prompting NBC to edit out portions of it from the live broadcast.08
