Former mayor of Ipswich charged with sexual assault

Paul Pisasale, the former mayor of Ipswich, is set to stand trial facing over 12 charges, including two that allege sexual assault while he was in his former position.

It is alleged that Pisasale, 68, sexually assaulted the same women twice in December 2016 whilst he was still serving as mayor of Ipswich. The other charges he is facing include perjury, corruption and fraud.

This is the first-time sexual assault allegations have been made public as Queensland law prevents alleged perpetrators from being identified until they are committed to stand trial for the crime. So far, the prosecution has dropped a charge of trying to pervert justice.

He did not enter a plea, and simply said “No thank you, your honour” when he was prompted to say something on his behalf. He resigned as mayor of Ipswich in 2017 after citing ailing health the day following a corruption watchdog raided his office.

It is also alleged he misused his public office in various ways and dishonestly made use of money and items belonging to the city council. He is also accused of mishandling a $10,000 charity donation.

The trial date is yet to be set.
